Dakhla changes with the light

A filmmaker’s guide to planning natural-light shoots in Dakhla, from the lagoon and coast to hotels, watersports and desert landscapes.

One of the reasons we love filming here is that the same location can tell different stories throughout the day. Early light can make the coast feel quiet and spacious. Late afternoon brings warmth and texture to the desert. As the sun lowers, people gather, the day’s sessions wind down and a different kind of atmosphere takes over.

Sunrise: the quieter story

Early shoots can be ideal for calm hotel scenes, empty landscapes, reflective water and the first movements of a new day. We plan arrival times with enough margin for setup, because the most delicate light often lasts only a short while.

Sunset: atmosphere and connection

Sunset isn’t only a landscape shot. It’s a shared experience: friends meeting after a session, a group gathering for an apéro, guests watching the horizon, or a restaurant preparing for the evening. Combining wide scenery with close human details creates a more complete film.

Don’t ignore the weather

A clear sky can produce beautiful clean light, while scattered clouds may add texture and color. Neither guarantees a dramatic result. Wind, haze and sea conditions can change quickly, so flexible planning and a backup shot list matter.

Build a story across several days

For destination campaigns and larger films, we prefer not to force every scene into one sunset. Different locations and activities may need different conditions. The goal is a collection of images that feels like Dakhla, rather than a checklist of landmarks.
